This weekend (03/02/2019) we celebrated the Christening of Francesca Fraser, the latest descendant ( as far as we know) of the Doncaster branch of the family.
Descended from Charles Henry – Charles Wilmot – Colin – Janette Fraser (neé Scotting) – Ross Fraser.
On the anniversary of the end of World War 1 we remember with love the Scottings who died. They believed they served in the “War to end all wars”.
Sadly not true.
Rest in peace.
Robert Scotting, (1887-1917)
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,
And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime.
Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.
If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est
Pro patria mori.
Welcome to the world Francesca the latest descendant of the Doncaster Scottings (Charles Henry and Nellie). She is the daughter of Carrie Ann Nolan and Ross Fraser born in Southport, Merseyside 23rd July 2018 weighing 8lb 4ozs.
To date we have just over 200 descendants recorded from the founders of the Doncaster Dynasty Charles Henry and Nellie. They had ten children, nine surviving to adulthood. Francesca is descended from the second oldest of these Charles Wilmot.
Her direct lineage from Charles Henry and Nellie is-
Charles Henry x Sarah Ellen (Nellie) Platts
Charles Wilmot x Lilian Clarke
Colin x Mavis Powls
Scott Fraser x Janette Scotting
Ross Fraser x Carrie Ann Nolan
Congratulations Ross and Carrie!
And here is a quick PDF tree of her Scotting ancestors.
Wilfred Henry was born in 1893 at 10 John St. Bury, the son of Alfred and Clara Jane Scotting.
He died on 9th May 1915 on board the hospital ship HMS Franconia from wounds sustained at the second battle of Krithia, Gallipoli. He was buried at sea off the Greek Island of Tenedos.
Wilfred was a private in the Lancashire Fusiliers, having signed up in 1910.
Prior to the war he worked at Athertons wood yard
The Second Battle of Krithia continued the Allies‘ attempts to advance on the Helles battlefield during the Battle of Gallipoli of the First World War. The village of Krithia and neighbouring hill of Achi Baba had to be captured in order for the British to advance up the Gallipoli peninsula to the forts that controlled passage of the Dardanelles straits. A small amount of ground was captured after two days of costly fighting but the objectives remained out of reach.
Many Scottings have served in the armed forces here we remember those who fell in the First and Second World Wars.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.
